Company Overview

TPG Telecom is a telecommunications service provider operating in Australia. The company was founded in 1986 then as Total Peripherals Group, becoming the second largest Australian telecommunications player following a series of mergers in the acquisition of brands including AAPT, B Digital, Chariot, iiNet, and Soul.

While traditionally a fixed line infrastructure service provider, the company secured spectrum in the 2600 MHz band in a 2013 government auction, 10 MHz paired 700 MHz spectrum in April 2017, and portions of 1800 MHz spectrum in December 2017. TPG has historically provided TPG Mobile services under an MVNO agreement with Vodafone, however has begun rollout of a 4G LTE-only network operating over B7 (2600 MHz) and B28 (700 MHz) bands.

Network construction was halted in late January 2019 following the ban of Huawei equipment from Australia after the United States initiated measures to restrict market access for Chinese firms, citing espionage risk.

In August 2018 VHA and TPG Telecom announced merger plans in order to increase competition with rival MNO's Telstra and Optus, and provide a JV framework for the November 2018 5G spectrum auction.
