Tele2 Eesti acquires 2300 MHz spectrum stepping closer to 5G

Tele2 wants to upgrade its 4.5G network in Estonia first to upgrade to LTE Advanced Pro, 4.75G, to service even more data volumes. To achieve this target the company purchased additional spectrum in the 2300 MHz band.

According to Argo Virkebau, CEO of Tele2 Eesti, the company has the largest frequency holdings in Estonia, which can provide the best mobile Internet. "By gaining a new frequency, we will further strengthen our position and we will be ready for the future. With 4.75G network, we can achieve speeds in the gigabits per second, so we are just steps from 5G, "said Virkebau.

"We are planning to use the new frequency first, especially in larger cities such as Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu and Narva, where loads are large and with additional capacity we can increase average speeds," Virkebau explained. According to him, the additional frequencies will allow the quality of distribution to be quickly improved and save money at the expense of the hardware.

Tele2 Eesti has 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 3500 MHz and exceptionally 450 MHz frequency licenses in Estonia. On the newly purchased 2300 MHz, Tele2 is the only operator operating in Estonia. "We see enormous potential in future technology in this frequency," added Virkebau.

According to the results of the Technical Surveillance Authority last year, Tele2, in comparison with other operators, has developed its network to the highest extent, increasing its download speed by 40.19%, or on average up to 52.5 megabits per second, and has increased the coverage of the 4G network by 12.5%, reaching 96%.
