Company Overview

Telenor Magyarország (Telenor Hungary) is the second largest mobile network operator in Hungary. The company was founded as Pannon GSM Telecommunications Ltd. in 1994. In February 2006 the company changed its brand to Pannon and refreshed its logo to meet the new corporate identity of its parent, Telenor. In May 2010 the company changed its name to Telenor. Telenor divested interest in the company in March 2018 to investment group PPF, including those in Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Serbia.

The company provides 2G GSM services over the 900 and 1800 MHz bands, and in April 2007 launched a 3G UMTS network over B1 (2100 MHz). The 3G network was upgraded to support DC-HSPA+ in August 2011.

Telenor Hungary launched 4G LTE in July 2012 over the B3 (1800 MHz) band, initially using a 10 MHz channel. The network was upgraded to support 150 Mbps in October 2013. LTE-Advanced with 2C aggregation was implemented in 2016 following the activation of B7 (2600 MHz, and B20 (800 MHz) carriers, providing up to 300 Mbps peak DL rates.

The company announced successful LTE-A Pro trials in December 2016, with 3C aggregation CA_3A-7A-20A achieving peak DL rates of 1.2 Gbps using 4X4 MIMO and 256QAM.

In partnership with Huawei, VoLTE was implemented by Telenor in January 2019.

Telenor Hungary 5G

Telenor launched a 5G test network in May 2019 using a 100 MHz channel in the n78 (3500 MHz) band. The test network is reported to provide 1.8 Gbps DL throughput using equipment provided by ZTE.
