T-Mobile launches pilot NB-IoT network in Czech Republic

  • Pilot started in Roztyly in Prague, Mlada Boleslav will be added in January
  • NB-IoT will strengthen T-Mobile's competence in the field of "Internet of things"
  • Operator remains the technology partner and integrator of SIGFOX IoT network

T-Mobile launched the NB-IoT test network for the Internet of Things (IoT), around its headquarters in Prague - Roztyly. In January 2018, this pilot will extend to Mladá Boleslav. This is not T-Mobile's first move in this area: the company has also been a technology partner for the SIGFOX IoT network for over two years, covering the whole of the Czech Republic. The operator further strengthens his competencies in the "Internet of Things" field. After completing and evaluating the trial operation of NB-IoT, T-Mobile plans to launch preparations for a nationwide commercial launch of this technology.

"We would like to expand our Portfolio in the Internet of Things area and add the NB-IoT technology to our existing SIGFOX network, which we can easily deploy on our LTE transmitters with software updates," says Ľubor Žatko, Director of T-Mobile Development and Construction. "We believe the two technologies will complement each other appropriately," he adds.

The main advantages of NB-IoT include high signal transmission to buildings, low cost of end devices and low power consumption, allowing for a large number of devices to operate at the same time. Technology can be used, for example, to measure electricity or gas consumption, parking systems or monitoring equipment with a wide range of uses in many areas (from territorial self-government to agriculture, to healthcare, for example). The NB-IoT network uses the licensed spectrum and has the same level of security as LTE. The parent company T-Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, has recently also signed up to support this standard.
