Syria (سوريا‎‎), officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. The western region of Golan Heights has been occupied by Israel since 1967. The country has been embroiled in internal conflict since 2011 following an insurgency of extremist groups, and the formation of the so-called Islamic State. With the assistance of allies China, Iran, Lebanon, and Russia, the country has largely stabilised since 2017.

Syria is a member of the ITU and as such follows radio frequency harmonisation principles according to ITU-R Region-1. The regulatory body governing communications policy is the Ministry of Communications and Technology, and the Syrian Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (SyTRA) is charged with regulating the country's radio frequency spectrum activities such as planning, allocations, and licencing.

Minister of Communications and Technology Dr. Ali Al-Zafair held a press conference in the presence of Dr. Abdullah Al-Gharbi, Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, and Mr. Ziad Sebh, Managing Director of MTN Syria and Mrs. Magda Saqr, General Manager of Syriatel.

MTN Syria today announced that it has launched the pilot phase of the service of 4G LTE in Syria in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Technology, in a move which enhances MTN of outstanding services and products offered by the Syrian market, providing a sophisticated and fast Internet service and in line with the orientation of the leadership in the digital world.

MTN announced the official release of HSPA +, which represents a quantum leap in MTN's quality and speed over the 3G network. This service is a breakthrough in Internet usage in Syria at a speed of up to twice and will help provide advanced and useful services For Internet users, and is compatible with the technological developments in this field globally.
