Overview

Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean under the full sovereignty of Norway. Situated north of mainland Europe, it is about midway between continental Norway and the North Pole. Comprising of three main islands, of a total in the thousands, the largest island is Spitsbergen, followed by Nordaustlandet, and Edgeøya.

As a territory of Norway Svalbard is not an independent member of the ITU however follows radio frequency harmonisation principles according to ITU-R Region-1. The regulatory body governing communications policy is the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Norwegian Communications Authority (NKOM) is charged with regulating the territory's radio frequency spectrum activities such as planning, allocations, and licencing.
