Overview

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (abbreviated ROK), is a sovereign state in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Officially, its territory consists of the whole Korean Peninsula and its adjacent islands. About three thousand islands, mostly small and uninhabited, lie off the western and southern coasts of South Korea.

Regulatory Environment

South Korea is a member of the ITU and as such follows radio frequency harmonisation principles according to ITU-R Region-3. The regulatory body governing communications policy is the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) is charged with regulating the country's radio frequency spectrum activities such as planning, allocations, and licencing.

South Korean 5G

Spectrum auctions held in June 2018 saw all three national mobile network operators secure spectrum in the 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz bands.

SK Telecom and KT each secured 100 MHz of the 3.5 GHz spectrum, while LG Uplus won 80 MHz. All three operators secured 800 MHz of the 28 GHz band.
