Overview
Jan Mayen is a Norwegian volcanic island situated in the Arctic Ocean. Although administered separately, Svalbard and Jan Mayen are collectively assigned the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code "SJ". Despite having no permanent population, Jan Mayen has telephone and internet connection over satellite, using Norwegian telephone numbers.
As a territory of Norway Jan Mayen is not an independent member of the ITU however follows radio frequency harmonisation principles according to ITU-R Region-1. The regulatory body governing communications policy is the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Norwegian Communications Authority (NKOM) is charged with regulating the territory's radio frequency spectrum activities such as planning, allocations, and licencing.
