Massive MIMO LTE trials conducted in partnership with ZTE during 2017. 4G coverage reached more than 95% of the population in April 2020. Telkomsel expects to deploy 4G networks in all villages in Indonesia by 2022. B40 (2300 MHz) TDD LTE was used until its refarm into 5G.

Telkomsel has selected Ericsson as its partner for 5G core NFVI rollout. Ericsson sits alongside Cisco and Huawei as the company's 5G partners. 5G NSA services were switched on June 2021, using the n40 (2300 MHz) band. Services were initially limited to Balikpapan, Medan and Surakarta, but quickly expanded to a large number of high density areas.
