MTN Afghanistan is a subsidiary of the South African multinational telecommunications corporation, MTN Group Limited. The parent company was established in 1994 as M-Cell, with MTN Afghanistan being a later addition. MTN Group's controlling shareholder as of 2001 was reported to be Johnnic Holdings, with Irene Charnley serving as the chairperson. In 2020, MTN Group decided to sell its shares in Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen, indicating a shift in the company's strategic focus. This decision was influenced by the observation that these assets contributed less than 4% to group earnings in the first half of the year. The majority 82.8% shareholding in MTN Afghanistan was transferred to Emerald International Investment, marking the group's exit from the Afghan market.
