Company Overview

Claro is the third largest mobile carrier operating in Costa Rica. Claro entered the market in 2011 following the passing of the Dominican Republic–Central America Free Trade Agreement which opened up the monopolistic telecommunications market to private enterprise.. Claro Costa Rica is a subsidiary of América Móvil S.A.B. de C.V, an international telecommunications group with operations in a range of countries throughout South America.

The company launched 2G GSM services over the 850 and 1800 MHz bands, and 3G UMTS (HSPA+) services over B1 (2100 MHz) in November 2011. 4G LTE services were launched in April 2014 over the B3 (1800 MHz) band. LTE-Advanced began late June 2018 with the implementation of 4X4 MIMO to provide up to 300 Mbps peak DL rates.
