Botswana Telecommunications Corporation, trading as beMobile, was established in 1980 to develop, operate, and manage Botswana's national telecommunication services. In November 2012, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) was converted from a statutory body into a public company limited by shares, and renamed Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited. Following further liberalisation of the telecommunications industry and establishment of a regulatory authority, BTC mobile network, beMobile was established in 2008. BTCL listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange on 8 April 2016.
The company provides 2G GSM services over 900/1800 MHz, and announced 3G UMTS over B1 (2100 MHz) in 2014. The company launched its 4G LTE network in April 2017, two years later than its rivals. beMobile 4G operates over B3 (1800 MHz) after the company was awarded a 10 MHz spectrum allocation in 2015.
