Azercell Telecom LLC is a mobile telecommunications company founded in January 1996 through a private-public partnership between Turkcell and Ministry of Communications of Azerbaijan Republic. Azercell remained a subsidiary of Telia Company until March 2018 when an agreement was struck between Fintur Holdings and Turkcell to divest its 51.3% holding in Azertel to Azintelecom, an enterprise wholly owned by the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Azercell is headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan and is firmly the country's largest mobile carrier by market share and coverage (99.8% by population).
Beginning December 1996, Azercell initially offered a 2G GSM service over the 900 MHz band and later 3G HSPA+ services over the B1 (2100 MHz) band. In 2012 the company launched its 4G LTE service over B3 (1800 MHz). Azercell has recently spoken of its LTE-A plans to deploy a 700 MHz service in carrier aggregation with its existing 1800 MHz network.
In April 2019 Azercell announced it had partnered with Ericsson to modernise its radio access network over a two year period in preparation for 5G.
