Clients can face scenarios where it may be advantageous to have a custom antenna designed in order to meet the application’s requirements rather than to adopt an existing product. This may be because existing antennas have inferior performance in a particular area (such as gain achieved at a certain operating frequency, poor efficiency, high VSWR, etc.) or that the costs associated with deploying an alternate antenna reduce the feasibility to deploy on a large scale.
In line with a comprehensive Quality Management System, Halberd Bastion utilises formidable R&D assets to develop antennas. The advanced manufacturing techniques, innovative testing and exceptional cost control all contribute to deliver custom antennas that meet project requirements.
Custom Antenna Design
Halberd Bastion can design antennas covering frequencies from 225 MHz to 80 GHz including:
- Custom-tuned UHF band Yagi
- 3G/4G/5G customer CPE antenna
- 2X2 MIMO dual polarised antennas
- 4X4 MIMO quad polarised antennas
- IoT/M2M antenna design & hardware optimisation
- UMTS/LTE/WiMAX broadcast antenna
- UNII band/Sub-6 GHz PtP/PtMP antenna
- 6 to 80 GHz microwave band antenna
Scenarios warranting a custom designed antenna include; when peak performance is a necessity, such as ensuring that cellular broadcast antennas, high capacity microwave backhauls and military communications are achieving optimal efficiency and, projects requiring large quantities such as IoT / M2M and CPE applications. Engineering an antenna takes time and the development process can be demanding however the benefits our clients receive are immense.
The physical production of Halberd Bastion’s designs is conducted by leading manufactures and these are offered to our clients as OEM products. More on this can be learned at Antenna Manufacturing.
Antenna performance is always a compromise or trade-off between numerous interacting elements, all of which contribute to the end capabilities of the final design. Not taking any particular antenna type into consideration, some of the obvious examples include; gain vs beamwidth, VSWR vs operating bandwidth, and cost vs quality. Naturally, off-the-shelf products are not optimised for any one operator’s specific circumstances and in case of a large project, critical applications or significant/extended operational period it becomes increasingly important to have a tailored antenna solution that has been specifically engineered to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
Typically, designing a custom antenna for a large project results in huge financial savings when compared to less-optimised off-the-shelf alternatives, this is especially true in regards to capital expenditure. Non-optimised shelf products are designed to fulfil a variety of roles and thus may be under or over engineered for the client’s purpose. Having a product that precisely meets the application’s requirements grants greater cost control in production and reduces any wasted or unnecessary performance characteristics.
In addition to antennas, Halberd Bastion also designs a full range of passive wireless components, please read about our Component Design Services for more information.
