Company Overview
Orange Burkina Faso, previously known as Airtel, is the second largest mobile carrier operating in Burkina Faso. Airtel Burkina Faso S.A was acquired from Bharti Airtel by Orange Group in June 2016 to strengthen the group's presence in Africa, with the rebranding process completed in March 2017.
The company operates standard 2G GSM services over the 900 MHz band, and launched B1 (2100 MHz) 3G services in May 2013 providing HSPA+ aross the West African nation. Orange, then Airtel, requested a licence to provide 4G LTE from the country's telecommunications regulator ARCEP. After securing a 15 year licence the company announced a successful launch of its LTE-A network (branded ‘4G+’) in Ouagadougou in late January 2019. The network is reported to be using B3 (1800 MHz), and offers peak data rates of 150 Mbps, however holds only 18.4 MHz of 1800 MHz spectrum - it may be speculated that the LTE-A service uses 4X4 MIMO, or 256QAM to achieve its stated performance.
