Company Overview
UMS is the second smallest of the mobile carriers operating in Uzbekistan. The network began as Uzdunrobita in 1991 and purchased by Russian telecoms giant MTS in 2004, and later rebranded as MTS in 2006. The company faced legal challenges in 2012 when the government of Uzbekistan revoked the company's operating license and arrested several of its top management, citing repeated regulatory violations. After seizure of the company's assets, MTS Uzbekistan filed for bankruptcy and the network shut down. MTS began negotiations to form a Russian-Uzbek partnership, which resulted in the successful relaunch as a joint state-owned enterprise UMS in 2014. In August 2016 MTS exited the partnership, selling its 50.01% stake to the government making it a wholly state-owned enterprise.
In December 2018 the company announced that in early 2019 it would begin rebranding as Mobiuz.
UMS operates standard 2G GSM services over 900 and 1800 MHz, and launched 3G UMTS services over B1 (2100 MHz) band in October 2008. The company launched 4G LTE services over the B20 (800 MHz) band in June 2016
