Telia and Nokia introduce 5G home gateway to Finland

Telia and Nokia will introduce Nokia FastMile 5G gateway for 4G-5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to the Finnish market. The gateway delivers super-fast mobile broadband to residential and business subscribers.

The gateway is a 3GPP-compliant 5G New Radio (NR) device that offers gigabit speeds on 4G and 5G technology. The indoor device, offering wifi access to the 5G network, is an excellent alternative to homes and offices without a fast fiber connection. The gateway is simple to install and uses a visual guide to help customers identify the right location with the best performance.

Telia has started testing with the device, which was introduced at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The first consumer pilots are expected to start during the spring.

“We have kicked off 5G with projects with industrial customers. Now the terminal market seems to be accelerating from anticipated schedules and the first terminals relevant to consumers are entering the market. We have developed 5G technology with our trusted partner Nokia, and now we are continuing our cooperation on the front line as we test how the 5G FWA gateway works and how it creates value for our customers,” says Janne Koistinen, 5G Program Director, Telia Finland.

Telia launched a pre-commercial 5G network in Helsinki in September 2018 and went live with a commercial network in three cities in the beginning of 2019, when the Finnish network licenses on the 3.5 GHz band came into effect.
