SmarTone launches Hong Kong's first LTE LAA network

(Hong Kong, 30 August 2018) SmarTone continues to pioneer new technology in Hong Kong with the launch of the city’s first live commercial License Assisted Access (LAA) Network. The network supports blazing 1Gbps download speeds using aggregate licensed and unlicensed LTE carriers with 5CC carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM. This important new network deployment took place after obtaining the relevant service license from the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA).

By deploying small cells that support LAA and build on LTE-Advanced features, SmarTone network provides customers with the best mobile experience with higher speeds and greater capacity. LTE LAA is another key milestone on the road to 5G.

“This new network deployment demonstrates our technology leadership and innovation to leveraging the latest technology to bring our customers an unparalleled mobile experience with increased speed and capacity,” said Mr Stephen Chau, CTO of SmarTone. “As a leading operator in Hong Kong, we will continue to embrace disruptive technology, using our stable and reliable network as the backbone to lay the ground for enhanced network performance on path towards 5G.”

SmarTone has completed the installation of LAA small cells in a number of popular hotspots in busy areas of Central, Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok and Shatin, and will be extending to even more locations. By installing these LAA small cells in strategic locations, they can be used to absorb traffic surges during festive and special events. SmarTone customers can now take the advantage of the experience brought by this technology, with compatible smartphone models.
