Regulator suspends Vodafone activities in Cameroon

Vodafone's activities have been suspended in Cameroon for non-compliant licenses, the telecommunications regulator (ART) said on Tuesday.

This decision by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MINPOSTEL) is motivated by the fact that Northwave Sarl has renounced its status as licensed telecommunications operator by surrendering its entire capital to Afrimax.

According to sources familiar with the case, in Northwave Sarl's license, it is stated that its license is "personal, non-assignable and does not confer any exclusive rights".

This provision is provided for in Article 30 of Decree 2017/2580 / PM of 6 April 2017 laying down the procedures for the establishment and / or operation of networks and supplies of electronic communications services subject to the regime of the " authorization.

Since the regulatory framework does not provide for the transfer of the license to another operator as Northwave would have done to Afrimax, this undertaking falls under the law.

The partnership signed in July 2017 between Vodafone and Cameroon telecommunications (CAMTEL), the public telecoms operator, stipulated that Vodafone Cameroon would use the existing infrastructures of CAMTEL which cover 100% the cities of Douala and Yaoundé and allow Vodafone to extend its geographical coverage throughout the country.
