MTN launches the first 4G LTE network in Cameroon

Close to 60 billion FCFA invested over 8 months to develop the network that covers 4 major towns at launch. The rest of the country will be covered progressively.

MTN Cameroon, leader of the telecommunications sector in Cameroon announces the launch of its 4G LTE network. MTN has become the first and only network in Cameroon to launch next generation 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.

MTN’s 4G LTE network will offer Cameroonians the fastest Internet possible and contribute to the socio-economic progress of Cameroon. At launch, MTN Cameroon’s 4G network covers the towns of Yaoundé, Douala, Bamenda and Buea. It will be extended progressively to other parts of the country.

MTN obtained from the Government in Cameroon the renewal of its licence in March 2015 with the right to exploit the most advanced technologies, and the operator launched its 3G network upon reception of this licence. Over the last 8 months, MTN Cameroon has invested close to 60 billion FCFA to develop a 4G LTE network that meets international standards and is on par, if not better, than the best in the world.

Thanks to MTN, Cameroon has become one of the few countries in the world to deploy 3G and 4G LTE technologies within the same year.

This major technological evolution shall contribute to the reinforcement of the competiveness of Cameroonian enterprises, promote job creation and accelerate the emergence of Cameroon.

«By launching the next generation 4G LTE technology, we are not only investing in a network. We are also, and most especially, investing in the Cameroonian people. We are investing in every child in the country through this new technology that will ease access to education, culture and health. We are also contributing to the competiveness of local businesses, and we are naturally accompanying the Government in its strides towards the emergence of Cameroon », declares Mrs. Philisiwe SIBIYA, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon.

MTN’s mission when it installed in Cameroon in February 2000 was to offer Cameroonians simple, innovative and accessible communication solutions to meet their needs. 15 years on, the leading telecommunications operator continues to invest massively to enable Cameroonians benefit from the technological evolutions provided by the future.
