Movistar Chile and Nokia first in Latin America to demonstrate 4.5G LTE-A Pro

SANTIAGO, June 29, 2017.- Nokia and Movistar Chile today held the first demonstration of 4.5G Pro in Latin America, reaching a speed of 1Gbps.

"Today is a very important day in the history of telecommunications in Chile since for the first time we reached the speed of 1Gbps, a new milestone. This is the first step towards a new generation of more powerful mobile infrastructure, on the way to 5G, "said Antonio Bueno, Network Director of Movistar Chile .

Javier Falcón, Sales Director of Nokia for Movistar commented: "With the tests in 4.5G Pro, Nokia is creating the technology to connect the world and maintaining its leadership in state-of-the-art networks."

4.5G Pro, also known as LTE Advanced and LTE-A, is a new generation of technology that will meet the growing demand for mobile broadband, achieving higher speed and lower latency compared to the 4G LTE offer available today. market.

This new generation of technology through carrier aggregation (Carrier Aggregation - CA), MIMO (Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output) and activation of 256 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) modulation, will allow Movistar to transport data traffic in two or more spectrum bands simultaneously, achieving greater efficiency and reliability in the network and giving operators greater flexibility in the management of their spectrum bands and, most importantly, impacting the final user throughput and the time of network response to the user (latency).

In the particular case of Nokia, this technology is based on a new generation of both hardware and software called Nokia AirScale , which allows radio bases smaller, more efficient and more sustainable and currently present the most powerful solution that exists in the cellular mobile market, even prepared to handle the requirements of the long-awaited 5G.

For the tests carried out in Movistar, Nokia provided an AirScale base radio , with aggregation of carriers, which allowed combining the different segments of the radio spectrum: Band 7 (2600 MHz) and Band 28 (APT 700 MHz) all this within an environment of controlled network, allowing to test and validate different scenarios, yielding satisfactory results in final user speed (throughput) and latency.

It should be noted that already at the beginning of the year, Nokia and Movistar Chile had made tests with fixed network technology based on XGSPON, also reached similar speeds of 1Gbps but in fiber optic access.

An "unprecedented" user experience

With the new generation of Nokia's 4.5G Pro networks, users will be able to enjoy higher speeds and lower latency, which will allow them to better perform current applications and open the door to launch new applications and services that require greater consumption. of data such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and with very low network response times such as clouding, survillance, virtual reality, robotics, HD streaming orchestration, telepresence services, ubiquity, cars that are handled autonomously, between much others.

"The current networks allow you to surf comfortably and stream audio and video. With the new generation of 4.5G LTE Pro technologies from Nokia, users can continue to enjoy these services with higher quality, as well as enjoy new services such as ultraHD video, 8K and massive video games online (MMO), thanks to the lower network latency All this will contribute to an unprecedented user experience ", concluded the manager of Nokia.

We create the technology that connects the world, we take a step in Chile to approach this ultra-connected world, maintaining our leadership in state-of-the-art mobile networks.
