Entering of 2018 means that we are one step forward in witnessing the commercial use of 5G. In 2017, 5G was absolutely a hot topic in the communications industry: Relevant standards, technologies, and layers made progress in several areas, mainstream vendors successively launched their pre-commercial products, and certain carriers actively carried out field tests.

On December 2, China Telecom opened 5G pilot base stations in Lanzhou. At present, China Telecom has launched 5G pilot base stations in six cities, namely Xiong’an, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu and Lanzhou.

Algar Telecom combined the 700 MHz and 1800 MHz bands to activate LTE-A in Uberlândia, city of Minas Gerais. The company promised speeds three times higher than those offered with traditional 4G although it recognized that the real speed will depend on factors such as the proximity of the antennas and the number of people connected to the same site, among others.

Vodacom’s first commercially available Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network is now operational in Gauteng. Vodacom is the first South African and one of the first African mobile network operators to announce the commercial availability of its NB-IoT network.
