Telma has its origins as the incumbent state-owned telecommunications service provider, dating back to 1896. Following privatisation in 2001 the company launched Telma Mobile in 2006. After changing hands several times the company is today owned by Axian Group, a a family-owned Malagasy company, with operations in several countries around the Indian Ocean.

The company has provided 2G GSM services over the 900 MHz band since December 2006 and 3G UMTS services over B1 (2100 MHz) since November 2009. 4G LTE was introduced in June 2015 over the B3 (1800 MHz) band.
