MTN Irancell (ایرانسل) is the second largest mobile carrier operating in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The company is a joint venture operated by MTN Group who hold a 49% ownership stake, the remainder owned by state-owned Iran Electronics Industries. The MTN Group is a multinational telecommunications group, operating in 21 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
The company has operated 2G GSM services over 900 and 1800 MHz since 2006, and 3G UMTS (DC-HSPA+) services over B1 (2100 MHz) and B8 (900 MHz) since 2014. Just months later in November 2014 the company also launched 4G LTE services initially over B3 (1800 MHz), later activating a second B7 (2600 MHz) carrier, and providing fixed wireless TDD-LTE over B42 (3500 MHz) with two 20 MHz channels. In January 2017 Irancell activated its LTE-A network which through carrier aggregation and other "4.5G" technologies demonstrated peak downlink data rates exceeding 1.2 Gbps. LTE-A Pro with 256QAM modulation has been implemented in major population centres.
