Company Overview

Movistar is a mobile network operating in Ecuador. The company was formed in 1994 as Otecel S.A. (branded as CelularPower and later BellSouth), a local and privately owned Ecuadorian enterprise. In 2005 the company was acquired and became a subsidiary of international telecommunications giant Telefónica. Telefónica is a 100% listed company operating in 21 countries across the globe.

The company switched on 2G GSM services in September 2005 over the 850 and 1900 MHz bands, and 3G UMTS over B5 (850 MHz) in July 2009. 4G LTE was activated in May 2015 over B2 (1900 MHz) after refarming acquiring 2x5 MHz of spectrum earlier in the year, with plans of adding B4 (1700 MHz) at a later date.
