Company Overview

Movistar is a mobile carrier operating in Costa Rica. The company is a subsidiary of international telecommunications giant Telefónica, who entered the market in 2011 following the passing of the Dominican Republic–Central America Free Trade Agreement which opened up the monopolistic telecommunications market to private enterprise.

The company switched on 2G GSM services in July 2005 over the 1800 MHz band, and 3G UMTS over B1 (2100 MHz) and B5 (850 MHz) in its November 2011 launch. 4G LTE was activated in July 2014 over B3 (1800 MHz).
