Company Overview
Movicel was originally created in 2003 as a subsidiary of the state owned Angola Telecom. In 2010, 80% of the company's capital was sold to various private companies, the remaining 20% remain in the hands of the state owned companies Angola Telecom and ENCTA. The seat of the company is the capital city Luanda. Movicel sells its services via a network of shops; recharging cards for pre-paid contracts are also sold by individual street sellers.
Movicel offers GSM based mobile communication for voice communications, text and multimedia messages, and mobile internet access. Movicel has coverage in all 18 Angolan provinces. Despite it's size, Movicel was first to market in Angola with their LTE service on B3 (1800 MHz) going live in 2012.
The company has investigated refarming its 2G 900 MHz spectrum to deploy its B8 (900 MHz) UMTS network, which was confirmed as active in 2012.
