Company Overview

Emtel is a telecommunications services provider operating in Mauritius. Founded in May 1989, the company is a joint venture between Currimjee Jeewanjee & Co. Ltd. and Millicom International Cellular SA. Emtel launched the first mobile telephony services in the Southern Hemisphere immediately following its inception in 1989.

The company has provided 2G GSM services over the 900 MHz band since November 1999, and 3G UMTS services over B1 (2100 MHz) since November 2004 - the first 3G network in Africa. 4G LTE was implemented in July 2012 providing 150 Mbps data rates over the B3 (1800 MHz) band.
