Overview

Algeria (الجزائر‎‎ / Algérie), officially the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a sovereign state in North Africa on the Mediterranean coast. Its capital and most populous city is Algiers, located in the country's far north.

Cellular and mobile broadband markets are served by three operators, Algerie Telecom Mobile (Mobilis), launched in 1999; Optimum Telecom Algérie (OTA, trading as Djezzy) entered the telecommunication market in 2002; and Ooredoo (formerly Nedjma) followed in 2004. The fixed telecommunication and Internet market is served by Algerie Telecom. As of June 2017 mobile coverage reaches 83.4% of the population, and 4G LTE accessible by 3.6% of Algerians due to its limited deployment outside of major urban centres.

Algeria is a member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and as such follows radio frequency harmonisation principles according to ITU-R Region-1. The regulatory body governing communications policy is the Ministère de la Poste, des Télécommunications, des Technologies et du Numérique, and the Autorite de Regulation de la Poste et des Communications Electroniques (ARPCE) is charged with regulating the country's radio frequency spectrum activities such as planning, allocations, and licencing.
